For Thursday’s Valero Texas Open there have been several golfers scratched. This is the second time this season that some pretty big names have been scratched right before tee time. We have been looking at what we could do when a CrowdPicks member picks a scratched golfer but doesn’t have time to change that golfer. Unfortunately, on our end there is only so much we can do without significantly altering our site. In all sports other than Golf and NASCAR, if the game is cancelled, we just delete it and re-post the pick when the game is rescheduled. The problem with golf is that a pick on CrowdPicks is three golfers, so if one golfer drops, both the event, and the pick still continue forward. Our system requires a pick on the top three, if we remove a golfer from the event either before the start time or after, then anyone with that golfer in their top three would have their whole weekend wiped out. But we also understand that if you place a bet on a guy in Vegas and he doesn’t play, you get your money back, and we want to try and be fair to everyone on this issue. We looked at coding a solution, but everything we discussed would have been a complete overhaul of the entire picking engine, and that’s not an option. We then looked at the impact of having a scratched golfer in your score and found that the zero that’s factored in get’s averaged out and ends up not making much of an impact at all. On average your season score would change anywhere from .2 to .9 depending how high your score was, how many total picks you had etc. and because of this minimal impact we aren’t going to change anything in the code. We have however decided that if you have a golfer in your top 3 that drops out of an event, we will give you the choice of leaving the zero in or removing the pick for that event, which means all golfers picked (in essence, getting your money back). Keep in mind that there are bonus points for number of picks made, so if you are picking 5 golfers a week, that zero might not impact you at all, but deleting 5 picks could. This probably isn’t the solution most of you were looking for, but we tried to look at all sides of the issue, and be fair to everyone. We will continue to try and alert you as best we can when a guy drops, but that sounds like a good blog topic that you could get credit for if a member were to do that. We will also keep an eye out for anyone trying to gain an advantage by picking a scratched golfer intentionally, although we’re not quite sure how effective that strategy would be, but we will look out for it. If you had Anthony Kim a few weeks back when he scratched or any other scratched golfer, send an e-mail to info@crowdpicks.com if you would like that weekend’s event pick removed. Thanks, The CrowdPicks Team
