Jason Taylor will be 34 years old when the 2008 season kicks off, but at 34 he still has plenty in the tank to be an impact player for the Redskins. The term “impact” should be defined though. Impact means getting quality starts and plugging a big hole left behind when Phillip Daniels and reserve DE defensive end, Alex Buzbee were lost for the season during the same practice. Impact does not mean that the Redskins just completed the last piece of the puzzle and are now Super bowl bound. The reality is that Taylor makes the Skins better for 2008, but it doesn’t put them ahead of the Cowboys, Giants or Eagles. So they will be a little better 4th place team than they were Sunday night, but to give up a 2nd round draft pick to be a better 4th place team doesn’t make sense. The Redskins overpaid for Taylor, bottom line. He has 2 years left on his contract and will be one of the oldest starting defensive ends this year. Taylor has said that he will play out his 2 years on his contract because he just wanted to play for a winner. I’m not sure the winner part will happen for JT this year, but I believe him when he says he will play 2 years. After that will he play a 3rd? Will a 36 year old DE still be able to do the things he needs to in order to keep playing? Dan Synder has had a long history for finding guys past their prime, and overpaying them. Taylor is a pro-bowler and he’s playing for his existing contract so we won’t know the full impact until the playoffs roll around this year, but keep this stat in mind. Since Snyder took over the Redskins in 1997 the veteran players the Redskins have signed have a combined 26 pro-bowl appearances. After they signed with the Redskins they produced zero pro-bowl appearances. And yes, I stole that stat from Colin Cowherd. But it was too interesting to pass up.
